About TISC:

Tura Internet Service Centre is an integrated technology developemnt centre to enable a multi-pronged integrated development of TURA with support of Information Communication Technology tools including Internet, Mobile, Wireless and Digital Media to help the local Youth, Women and People to seek and exploit education, livelihood, vocation, and linkages to the economic opportunities.

Tura is a tribal area in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, which is also a parliamentary constituency. Being the remote, tribal area, that too in the hilly area belonging to North East, it has been devoid of the advantages of information communication technology revolution in general and Internet in
particular. The entire region is dispersed and people hardly have any basic information infrastructure. It is learnt that if there could be a sustainable and long lasting center for information infrastructure, the center could mean a lot to the people and may help the local population in reaping the fruits of development, and also using various information and digital media to reach out to the outer world to make their produce sold in commercial market places.

The existing socio-economic condition of TURA is a picture of city facing both traditional and
modern day challenges. TURA’s strength is its human and natural resources, but so far no
desirable outcomes visible. The key challenging areas are:
- Lack of quality human resource development approach among children and youths
- Lack of economic opportunities and value addition in traditional agro based activities
- Lack of entrepreneurship & training
- Lack of information & communication resources
- Lack of measures towards resource management

Participating Parties:

  1. DEF as main implementation partner, with NEDF as regional partner
  2. NIXI as financial support partner (http://nixi.in)
  3. TURA Member of Parliament as facilitator of local needs, infrastructure & resource mobilization
